Tuesday marks the opening of the 2011 Big East basketball tournament, which, as history has shown, is a pretty darn exciting week of basketball. Heck, most would probably argue that it’s more exciting than the entire NIT tourney. This year’s Big East tourney shouldn’t disappoint in the excitement department, particularly because some bracketologists have as many as 11 teams making it to the big dance. While we think 11 is a stretch, there are some compelling arguments to be made, mainly that going into their conference tournament, the Big East has 8 teams ranked in the AP top 25. They have 10 teams with 20 or more wins, and Marquette is right on the doorstep with 18. Coincidentally, if the Big East did get 11 teams in the tournament it would break the NCAA record, which is held by the Big East, when it entered 10 teams in the NCAA tournament in 2010.
