The Butler Did It Again

By: AE on: Sunday, March 20, 2011 @9:02 pm

The Butler Did It Again So I know the title is pretty lame, but it’s an oldie and a goodie, especially when it comes to the Butler Bulldogs, who for whatever reason seem to captivate American this time year.  2 days after knocking off Old Dominion at the buzzer, they did it again, but this time with a little more drama because it wasn’t ODU, it was number 1 seed Pittsburgh.  Before we start the Butler love fest, let’s examine Pitt for a quick second.  They are the first number one seed out of the tournament, and should we really be shocked?  They have made the tournament every year since 2002, but have only made 1 sweet sixteen appearance.  Maybe this speaks to a larger issue, or maybe we should applaud them for consistency, but either way, they are no more for 2011.  Now back to Butler.

Game Of The Night: Utah St. v. Kansas St.

By: josh q. public on: Thursday, March 17, 2011 @1:43 pm

Game Of The Night: Utah St. v. Kansas St.(truTV 9:45 PM ET)  Bracket buster alert!  Bracket buster alert!  Ahhh, the dreaded 12-5 match-up.   Since 1989, a No. 12 seed has beaten a No. 5 in the opening round in every year but two.  Why should this year be any different?  It won’t be.  It won’t be because the Utah State Aggies are mad as hell and they’re not gonna take it anymore.  Utah State forward Tai Wesley:  “Our seed is a slap in the face.  We could have won three more games, then we probably could have gotten a 10 seed.”  Just so you know, had Utah State won three more games, they would have been 33-0.  Yowza!  Utah State, led by six seniors, grown men, rolled through the regular season to win the WAC by five games and followed that up with the conference tournament title.  The Aggies are tenacious.  The Aggies are disciplined.  They can hurt a team in many different ways.  Tonight, expect them to hurt the overrated and overhyped K-State Wildcats in many different ways.   Expect one of the country’s best post players, WAC player of the year Tai Wesley, to hurt the K-State Wildcats in many different ways.  Tonight expect a dreaded 12-5 upset.  Get your popcorn ready!

Peace out homies!  Six Two and Even!

Tyler Hansbrough: Superstar

By: josh q. public on: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 @1:39 pm

Tyler Hansbrough: SuperstarDon’t you know that you are a shooting star, and all the world will love you just as long, as long as you are a shooting star.  -Bad Company

Just a quick one.  A run and stick one.  A treat or trick one.  Remember Tyler Hansbrough?  Last seen, Hansbrough was scoring the first basket of both halves and finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds in North Carolina’s rout of Michigan State in the 2009 NCAA Championship game.  He left college basketball with a Naismith Award and as the ACC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,872 points (12th in NCAA history).  He left college basketball and outside of Chapel Hill and Indianapolis, he has nary been heard from since.  Until last night that is.         Read More »

Duke’s Kyrie Irving: Game Changer

By: josh q. public on: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 @11:08 am

Dukes Kyrie Irving: Game ChangerPoint blank, shot between the eyes.  Point blank, like little white lies you tell to ease the pain.  You’re walkin’ in the sights, girl, of point blank; and it’s one false move and baby the lights go out.  -Bruce Springsteen

Word out of Durham is that Duke freshman phenom Kyrie Irving is practicing with the team.  Like Jimmy Conway, Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski said Irving practiced “a little bit.”  No, no, no, no, no.  You insulted him a little bit.  You got a little bit out of order yourself.  Wanna know what else Coach K said?  Huh?  Do ya?  Coach K also said, “There is a chance that he would play.”  Yowza yowza yowza!  No gnews may be good gnews with Gary Gnu, but for Duke fans, this is great gnews.  I know Irving hasn’t donned a uniform since he hurt his right big toe in the first week of December.  I know ACC Player of the Year Nolan Smith has filled the point guard role admirably.  Admirably Horatio Nelson.  Admirably Jack Fletcher.  Admirably David Farragut.  I know, but like Farragut done did say himself, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”  Full speed ahead with Kyrie Irving.          Read More »

Beast of a Big East

By: AE on: Monday, March 7, 2011 @11:25 pm

Beast of a Big EastTuesday marks the opening of the 2011 Big East basketball tournament, which, as history has shown, is a pretty darn exciting week of basketball.  Heck, most would probably argue that it’s more exciting than the entire NIT tourney.  This year’s Big East tourney shouldn’t disappoint in the excitement department, particularly because some bracketologists have as many as 11 teams making it to the big dance.  While we think 11 is a stretch, there are some compelling arguments to be made, mainly that going into their conference tournament, the Big East has 8 teams ranked in the AP top 25. They have 10 teams with 20 or more wins, and Marquette is right on the doorstep with 18.  Coincidentally, if the Big East did get 11 teams in the tournament it would break the NCAA record, which is held by the Big East, when it entered 10 teams in the NCAA tournament in 2010.  Read More »

Parity Not a Problem in College Basketball

By: AE on: Saturday, February 26, 2011 @8:12 pm

Parity Not a Problem in College BasketballIf I told you that there was a college basketball game today that pitted two conference rivals, both ranked in the top 10, would that be something you’d be interested in?  Sure you would, probably because you’d assume it meant a Duke vs North Carolina matchup (wrong).  Ohio St vs Michigan St (wrong again).  Syracuse vs Georgetown (not quite).  In actuality, the game was #6 San Diego St and #7 BYU.  Nope, that’s wasn’t a typo.  San Diego St and BYU (quick, what the San Diego St nickname)?  Read More »
