The New York Knicks: Star Makers

By: josh q. public on: Monday, March 21, 2011 @11:19 am

The New York Knicks: Star MakersI believe that everybody’s a celebrity and we’ve all got personality ’cause I’m a starmaker and I can make you a star.  -The Kinks

What’s crack-a-lacking sports fans?  I’ll tell you what ain’t crack-a-lacking.  The New York Knicks defense ain’t crack-a-lacking.  They ain’t crack-a-lacking by a longshot.  No they ain’t.  The Knicks defense is bad.  The Knicks defense is godawful.  The Knicks defense is atrocious.  If you say it loud enough, you’ll always sound precocious. Um-diddle-diddle-um-diddleye!  I’m sorry.  This is no singing matter.  Red Auerbach once said, “Basketball is like war in that offensive weapons are developed first, and it always takes a while for the defense to catch up.”  I’ll tell you what, if the Knicks’s defense doesn’t catch up soon, they’re gonna lose this war.      Read More »

Tyler Hansbrough: Superstar

By: josh q. public on: Wednesday, March 16, 2011 @1:39 pm

Tyler Hansbrough: SuperstarDon’t you know that you are a shooting star, and all the world will love you just as long, as long as you are a shooting star.  -Bad Company

Just a quick one.  A run and stick one.  A treat or trick one.  Remember Tyler Hansbrough?  Last seen, Hansbrough was scoring the first basket of both halves and finishing with 25 points and 11 rebounds in North Carolina’s rout of Michigan State in the 2009 NCAA Championship game.  He left college basketball with a Naismith Award and as the ACC’s all-time leading scorer with 2,872 points (12th in NCAA history).  He left college basketball and outside of Chapel Hill and Indianapolis, he has nary been heard from since.  Until last night that is.         Read More »

Who Needs Melo When You Got Mr. Big Shot

By: josh q. public on: Thursday, February 24, 2011 @9:00 am

Who Needs Melo When You Got Mr. Big ShotTake my hand.  Here I stand.  I’m your man.  -Leonard Cohen

Everybody’s in the Big Apple is yipping about Carmelo Anthony.  Everybody in the Big Apple is yapping about Carmelo Anthony.  Yipping and yapping.  Flipping and flapping.  All day long at school I hear how great Melo is at this or how wonderful Melo did that!  Melo!  Melo!  Melo!  What about the other guy the Knicks got in this trade?  You know, the guy with the ring?  The guy they call Mr. Big Shot?  You had to be a big shot last night.  You had to prove it to the crowd.  Chauncey Billups was a big shot last night.  Chauncey Billups proved it to the crowd.  He also proved Donnie Walsh and Mike D’Antoni right.  For the past two days, Walsh and D’Antoni have been telling anyone who would listen, that Billups was  much much more than just a high-salary throw-in.  For the past two days, Walsh and D’Antoni have been telling anyone who would listen, that Billups would be the straw that stirs the Knicks’ drink.         Read More »

Game Of The Night: Bucks v. Knicks

By: josh q. public on: Wednesday, February 23, 2011 @1:50 pm

Game Of The Night: Bucks v. Knicks

(MSG 7PM ET)  If you read this space with any regularity, you know the rules of Game of the Night state the game must be nationally televised game.  Today I say, to hell with the rules. Today I say what Henry David Thoreau always says, “Any fool can make a rule, and any fool will mind it.”  I’m no fool.  I’m watching this game.  I’m watching this game because I sure do love me some run and gun basketball.  It’s not necessarily championship basketball, but it sure is fun basketball.  It sure was fun when Hank Gathers and Bo Kimble were each scoring nearly 30 points a game for Loyola-Marymount.  It sure was fun when Alex English, Kiki Vandeweghe, Dann Issel and David Thompson were leading the Denver Nuggets to a record 126.5 points per night.  It sure is gonna be fun to watch Melo and the New York Knicks run and gun tonight.  Get your popcorn ready!

Peace out homies!  Six Two and Even!

Deron Williams And Other Coach Killers

By: josh q. public on: Friday, February 11, 2011 @4:19 pm

Deron Williams And Other Coach KillersAnd then he looked right through me as if I wasn’t there.  And he just kept on singing, singing strong and clear.  Killing me softly with his song.  Killing me softly with his song.  -Roberta Flack

The Jazz were down 87-86 to the Chicago Bulls down the stretch.  The Jazz got the ball and Deron Williams headed upcourt on the fast break.  He…Could…Go…All…The…Way!  He could, but he doesn’t.  Instead, Derrick Rose caught up from behind and knocked the ball away to give the Bulls the ball back with about a minute left.  Next thing you know, Rose is blowing past Williams staright to the hizzy.  Next thing thing you know, Williams throws the ball away.  Next thing you know, the Bulls win!  The Bulls win!  The Bulls win!  Next thing you know, Jerry Sloan stepped down after 23 seasons and 1,127 wins at the helm of the Utah Jazz, saying he simply ran out of energy to coach anymore.  Rumor has it, he simply ran out of energy to caoch Deron Williams anymore.  Rumor has it, Deron Williams refused to run plays Jerry Sloan called.  Rumor has it, Deron Williams led a mutiny against Jerry Sloan.  Apparently, he didn’t appreciate Sloan’s Captain Queeglike ways.  Queeg:  “Mr. Maryk, you may tell the crew for me that there are four ways of doing things aboard my ship: The right way, the wrong way, the Navy way, and my way.  They do things my way, and we’ll get along.”  Williams didn’t want to do things Sloan’s way.  They didn’t get along.  Now, Jerry Sloan haws gone the way of Captain Queeg, transferred to an obscure naval supply depot in Iowa.  But Williams isn’t the first coach killer the NBA has seen.  Wanna read about some more?  Sure you do.  Follow me after the jump.          Read More »

NBA Midseason Awards

NBA Midseason Awards

I like Slam dunks take me to the hoop.  My favorite play is the alley oop.  I like the pick-and-roll, I like the give-and-go.  Cause it’s basketball, uh, Mister Kurtis Blow.  -Kurtis Blow

Ace may be the place with the helpful hardware but this is the place with the NBA hardware.  The place with the NBA midseason hardware.  The hardware that’s fun to wear.  More fun than a barrel of monkeys.  More fun than a clown on fire.  More fun than a sack of dead kittens.  More fun than all of that.  Like my main man the Big Fundamental always says:  “Good, better, best.  Never let it rest.  Until your good is better and your better is best.”  Who’s good?  Who’s better?  Who’s best?  After the jump, take a look for yourself.  Do it.              Read More »

Bill Buckner: Hell Hath Frozen Over

By: josh q. public on: Tuesday, January 4, 2011 @1:44 pm

Bill Buckner: Hell Hath Frozen OverIs she really going out with him?  Is she really gonna take him home tonight?  Is she really going out with him?  ‘Cause if my eyes don’t deceive me, there’s something going wrong around here.  -Joe Jackson

Holy schnikies!  I should have known something was up.  I should have known it  when Billy Buckner returned to the Red Sox in 1990 and received a rousing standing ovation from the Fenway Faithful.  I should have known it when Billy Goat threw out the first pitch to Dewey Evans at the Sox home opener as they unfurled their 2007 World Series Championship Banner and received yet another rousing standing ovation from the Fenway Faithful.  I should have.  I didn’t.  I certainly didn’t see this coming.  I didn’t see Buckner being hired to manage the Brockton (Mass.) Rox, a team in the independent Can-Am League.  Bill Buckner played for over twenty years in the bigs.  Bill Buckner accumulated over 2700 career hits.  In one fateful moment Bill Buckner ruined my life forever.  Or at least until 2004.  And now this?  Now he’s the manager of a local ball club?  Why it’s a travesty.  It’s a travesty of a mockery of a sham of a mockery of a travesty of two mockeries of a sham.  What’s next?   Read More »
