We gon’ ride. Keep my pistol on my side. Always creep wit’ the nine when I ride. Don’t sleep. -Tupac Shakur
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Let me preface this post by saying, I play fantasy baseball. I play a lot of fantasy baseball. I play in one fantasy baseball league that is not your average league. A league where you have to be smarter than average bear. Hey Boo Boo! The league is called Lozoball. It is the brain child of NHL.com writer, Dave Lozo. This league features some 30 teams managed by some of the finest fantasy baseball minds in the free world today. This league also features a salary cap. With 30 teams and a salary cap, your average sleeper list just won’t do. Guys like Luis Valdez, a relief pitcher for the Atlanta Braves are being drafted. Since it’s a keeper league, 18 year-old wunderkinds, like A’s catcher Max Stassi, are being drafted. I’m a here and now guy. I don’t draft upside guys. I draft guys that may help today. Just win baby! That’s why I’m drafting Detroit Tigers’ oufielder Casper Wells.
When Detroit traded away star center fielder of the past, Curtis Granderson, they did so with the hopes that Austin Jackson could step in and become the Tigers’ star center fielder of the present. If that doesn’t happen, if Jackson simply is not ready for the Show, not ready to have somebody else carry his bags, not ready to hit white balls for batting practice, not ready to play in ballparks that are like cathedrals, not ready for women who all have long legs and brains, if he is not ready for all that, Casper Wells is knocking on the door. Knock knock. Who’s there? Casper Wells bitch!
If Jackson needs a bit more grooming at Triple A, Casper Wells will get a shot at the center-field job in 2010. Wells is coming off a productive offseason. An offseason where he just tore up the Arizona Fall League. Tore…it…up! There, he displayed both power and speed. There, he led the Peoria Javelinas to the league championship. There, he hit .351 with 35 RBI while nearly half of his 27 hits went for extra bases. There, as the kids like to say, he raked. He just soon may be raking in a ballpark near you. Hey, I was right about Brent Celek was’t I? You bet your bippy I was!
