Now this looks like a job for me, so everybody just follow me, ’cause we need a little controversy, ’cause it feels so empty, without me. -Eminem
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Look who’s back. Back again. Jim Edmonds is back. Tell a friend. Yes sports fans, tell a friend Jim Edmonds, who is now 39-years-old and has not seen big league pitching since the 2008 postseason, is back. Back in the back of a Cadillac. Number one with a bullet, he’s a power pack. At least that what the Milwaukee Brewers are hoping. Last week, the Brewers gave the four-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove Award-winning outfielder a chance to show that he can still play. All he has to do now is win the job in training camp.
If Jim Edmonds can show even just glimpses of his past, he should surely make this make this ballclub. Surely you can’t be serious. I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.
- Glimpses of him running straight back..back…back..back towards the center field wall of Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, diving outstretched, superman style, for a fly ball over his head and ultimately making the catch on the warning track.
- Glimpses of Jason LaRue hitting a deep shot to center that surely would have been enough to be a home run. Surely you can’t be serious. I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley. On a dead run, Edmonds scaled the wall, reached his entire right arm over the fence, and caught the ball. Game over.
- Glimpses of the the 2004 NLCS, hitting an extra-inning bomb for the wiiner winner chicken dinner in Game 6 and making spectacular defensive plays in game 7 that led the Cardinals to the pennant.
The Brewers’ projected outfield starters, from left to right, are Ryan Braun, newcomer Carlos Gomez and Corey Hart. Jody Gerut is penciled in as the primary backup. For now, Edmonds is among four non-roster outfielders invited to camp, along with Trent Oeltjen, Logan Schafer and Adam Stern. I hope Jim Edmonds makes it. Maybe I’m just nostalgic. Maybe I just still have memories that are so thick I have to brush them away from my face. Maybe so, but I don’t think Jim Edmonds is quite done making still more memories just yet.
