Sheffield Wants Back

One more time. We’re gonna celebrate. Oh yeah, all right. Don’t stop the dancin’.  -Daft Punk

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  Gary Sheffield once said, “I’m a year at a time guy.  If I have a good year, go on the next one.  I want to go out on a high note.”  He didn’t have a good year last year.  He didn’t go out on a high note.  Sure he hit his 500th home run.  But that was about all he did.  Now, according to reports, the 41 year-old Sheffield is in great shape.  He is hoping to play for two more seasons.  He is hoping to reach reach the 3,000 hit plateau.  He is hoping to finish his career with the Tampa Bay Rays.  Like my main man Albert Einstein always says, “Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow.”

The Detroit Tigers hoped for tomorrow, but Sheffield’s stay there was disappointing.  The Tigers were hopeful he would be a powerful presence at the plate.  They were hopeful the $28 million, two-year contract extension they gave him after acquiring him from the Yankees would not go in vane.   Their hopes went unasnswered.  He was hurt much of his time in Detroit and was ultimately unceremoniously released.  The Mets took a flyer on Sheff.  He was by far the most reliable left fielder on the squad for much of last season, but that’s not saying a whole heck of a lot.  So now he wants to play for two more years?  Good luck to him.  Better luck the team that signs him.
