Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! How ’bout them Celtics? Them eight in a row Celtics? How ’bout Rajon Rondo? More gas in his tank than Exxondo. Go to sleep, and he’s gondo. Just like another guy I know. Just like Clyde the Glide Frazier. Clyde was one of the first players to make stealing the ball an art form. He would make sudden steals. He would make abrupt steals. Precipitous steals. Unforseen steals. Surprising the offense and then he was gone. When asked about his defensive success, Frazier answered that he defended in such a manner that it appeared he was not playing defense. When he did so, the offensive player was often tricked into letting his guard down whereby Frazier would steal the ball with his quick hands. Does that sound like anybody? Sounds to me a whole lot like Rajon Rondo.
Last night, Rajon Rondo recorded 13 big assists. Last night, Rajon Rondo recorded 9 big rebounds. And last night, Rajon Rondo recorded 5 big steals to help lead the Celtics to a victory over Milwaukee. Hooray Rajon Rondo! Rondo is the only Celtics player to register those numbers in each of those categories in a single game since the NBA began tracking steals in 1973-74. DJ never did it. Tiny never did it. Heck, Larry the Legend himself never did it. Rajon Rondo did.
As we speak, Rondo is the league leader in steals. He plays tough defense. He plays rough defense. No Marshmallow Fluff defense. He is the best defensive point guard in basketball. Chris Paul be damned. Rondo creates turnovers. He then turns those turnovers he created into a devastating transition attack. Mesmerizing, tantalizing. Captivating, devastating.
During this off-season there was much ballyhoo over whether or not the Celtics’ brass would extend Rondo’s contract. That was answered with a five year deal worth at least $55 million. A five year deal worth every penny. Where once the point guard position was the question mark, it is now the exclamtion point. Exclamation point guard that it. Swimmin’ pools, movie stars. Y’all come back now, y’hear?
Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
