Well, it seems to me, sir, that God gave me a special gift, made me a fine instrument of warfare. Well, what I mean by that, sir, is… if you was to put me and this here sniper rifle anywhere up to and including one mile of Adolf Hitler with a clear line of sight, sir… pack your bags, fellas, war’s over. Amen. -Saving Private Ryan
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! This off-season, when the New York Rangers shelled out 37.5 million clams over five years for Marian Gaborik, they were worried about one thing. They were worried about his health. Like my main man Mahatma Ghandi always says, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” I guess Gaborik is just a lucky guy. He’s got both. About time. Gaborik has been limited by injuries for most of his career and has never played 82 games in a season. Last year, he missed 65 games over the course of the season with a hip injury, eventually undergoing surgery in January. I guess that surgery paid off.
Last night, Marian Gaborik became the first 20-goal scorer in the NHL this season. He became the first 20-goal scorer when he opened the scoring in the Rangers’ game against the Penguins. Hooray Gabby! For you Rangers fans keeping score at home, in the last 50 years, the only other Blue Shirts who were the first player to reach the 20-goal plateau in a season, based on the earliest date, were Rod Gilbert in 1966-67 and Theo Fleury in 2000-01 (tied with Bill Guerin and Ziggy Palffy).
Gaborik joined a Rangers team shifting towards coach John Tortorella’s uptempo, attack-oriented system. New York desperately needed the scoring a healthy Gaborik could provide. So far, they’ve gotten that. And then some.
