SNF: Christmas Edition

I hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas, or Festivus, or whatever else you celebrate today. When I think of Christmas, I immediately think of the NFL. OK not really but for whatever reason the NFL Network is hosting a Thursday Night Football “Special Edition” tonight. The game’s not on Thursday so don’t call it Thursday Night Football. Whatever. It’s the Chargers against the Titans and here’s all you need to know for this game:

From me and mine to you and yours, Merry Christmas everybody! I’m going to celebrate Christmas like every nice Jewish boy celebrates Christmas. I’m going to the movies. I’m going to see Avatar at Imax. In the meantime, enjoy the musical stylings of the Godfather of Soul, James Brown:

From Bradshaw To Stafford The QB Jinx Lives On

From Bradshaw To Stafford The QB Jinx Lives OnFrom Bradshaw To Stafford The QB Jinx Lives On

What’s the worst thing that can happen to a quarterback?  He loses his confidence.  -Terry Bradshaw

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  It’s official.  The quarterback jinx lives on.  Matthew Stafford was just placed on the Lions’ injured-reserve list on Thursday ending his season.  Stafford was the first player chosen in the 2009 draft.  Stafford finished his debut season with a 2-8 record as a starter for Detroit.  Big deal you say?  Who cares you say?  I say that preserves a streak that’s spanned four decades.  Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport… the thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat.  Ahhh yes, the agony of defeat.  Since 1967, the first year of the common draft, no quarterback selected with the first overall pick has had a winning record as a starter during his rookie season.  The streak began with Terry Bradshaw, who was taken with the first choice of the 1970 draft.  If  Sam Bradford or Jimmy Clausen gets chosen with the number one pick by the Cleveland Browns, the streak shall continue.

Rest In Peace George Michael

Takes a second to say goodbye, say goodbye, oh, oh, oh.  It takes a second to say goodbye, say goodbye, oh, oh, oh, say bye bye…  Where you going to now..  -U2

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  I went to college in Washington DC in the ’80s.  My friends and I would wait with bated breath for Sundays. Bated breath I tell you! Sunday!  Sunday!  Sunday!  You see, Sunday nights is when George Michael’s Sports Machine came on.  You have to remember, Al Gore hadn’t invented the internet yet.  There was no ESPN, or any other sport channels, showing highlights ad-nauseum. Without pauseum.  Giving us our sports clips like Santa Clauseum.  The only sports we got were the actual games, This Week In Baseball and the local news.  And the Sports Machine. If I wanted to see Larry Bird, I had to wait for Sunday. If I wanted to see Roger Clemens, I had to wait for Sunday. Magic? Gretzky? Sweetness? Bull Riding? NASCAR? I had to wait for Sunday for George Michael to push that big button.  Unfortunately George Michael is now pushing that Big Button in the sky.  He died this morning at Sibley Memorial Hospital.  Rest in Peace George Michael.  You were a pioneer.  You will be missed.

Peace out George Michael.  Six two and Even!

Monta Ellis: Shades Of Steve CarltonMonta Ellis: Shades Of Steve Carlton

Heavy boots of lead.  Fills his victims full of dread.  Running as fast as they can.  Iron Man lives again!  -Black Sabbath

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  Like the man says, “It’s not who starts the game, it’s who finishes.”  Last night, Monta Ellis did both.  Last night, Monta Ellis did everything in between.  Last night, Monta Ellis played his sixth complete game of the season.  Amazing armor!  That’s Iron Man!  A blazing power!  That’s Iron Man!  Ellis has already tied the most complete games for any player in any of the last five seasons.  He’s tied Monta Ellis.  He’s tied Allen Iverson.  The last player with more was the King himself.  LeBron James had 10 in 2004-05.  Just so you know, 20 of the 30 Major League Baseball teams had fewer than six complete games from their starting staff this past season.  Just so you know, Steve Carlton had 30 complete games all by his lonesome in 1972.

I hope that you’re happy now like you’re supposed to be.  And I know that this will hurt you more than it hurts me.  -Elvis Costello

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  Just a quick one.  A lickety-split one.  A run and hit one.  Jessica Simpson is not happy.  It appears her little heart broke all over again when word spread that her ex-boyfriend Tony Romo had gotten engaged to his new girlfriend Candice CrawfordAccording to the National Enquirer, (Hey, they got the Tiger thing right) Simpson “obsesses over Tony’s every move with Candice, and she’s always held out hope that she could win him back … She always dreamed that she’d be the one to marry Tony.  She had their wedding all planned in her head.”  Who knew?  Who knew she had stuff in her head?  I hope you’re happy Tony Romo!

Game Of The Night: Ole Miss v. WVU

Game Of The Night: Ole Miss v. WVU

(ESPN2 7:30PM ET)  I do love me some Da’Sean Butler.  What’s not to love?  This kid is the undisputed leader of one of the best teams in the country.  Mr. Everything.  He does a little bit of this.  He does a litlle bit of that.  You stick around and he’ll make it worth your while.  Got numbers beyond what you can dial.  Maybe it’s because he’s so versatile.  His versatility and dependability are why the Mountaineers’ have gotten off to their perfect start.  There are times when it seems Butler plays all positions on the floor at once.  He leads the team in scoring and is second in rebounding and assists.  Yowza!  Get your popcorn ready!
