The saga has supposedly come to an end for the sinister basketball icon we call A.I. In a recent post from Stephen A. Smith on his personal website, Iverson told the Philadelphia Inquirer he wanted to announce his plans to retire from the NBA. Holy cow! Looking back on this one man wrecking crew, there is one word that comes to my head. Flash. Iverson dazzled defenders with his silky smooth handles and dropped buckets whenever he wanted. The 5′11” or 6′0” guard played hard on a nightly basis and often played through his injuries. That made it clear he had a true compassion and respect for the game that made him famous.
The most fond memory of Iverson for me is when he led the Sixers into the NBA Finals and battled the Lakers. Iverson really didn’t have anyone around him that was good enough to get the team over the hump. Instead, pure will power, fight, grit and tenacity led the way in the very enjoyable series that indeed went to the Lakers at the final buzzer. Watching Iverson compete and make a statement for himself in that series was simply a remarkable experience. So, thanks to you Mr. Iverson for providing me with the entertainment and amazement over the years. Even dating back to your interview about “practice.” In my book it was all good and I bid you well!
