Whenever you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth. -Arthur Conan Doyle
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! That’s right, the bounce is back. Yeah ma, your dude is back. Tell the whole world the Truth is back. Yes sports fans, your boy is back. Yes sports fans, Paul Pierce is back. Back with a vengeance. Rapid fire Louie like Rambo got bullets, I’m a gonna die harder like my kid Bruce Willis. Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker! I’ve said in the past that Paul Pierce is the most underrated player in the world. That’s what happens. That’s what happens when you don’t play in big games on the big stage. Well, the Truth is, Paul Pierce ain’t underrated no more. He’s now played the big games on the big stage. But, for those of you who think he cannot do this again, you better think twice.
Last night, Paul Pierce did what Paul Pierce always does. Last night, Paul Pierce opened the season with a bang. Bang bang. He shot me down. Bang bang. I hit the ground. Bang bang. That awful sound. Bang bang. Last night Paul Pierce shot the LeBron James Cleveland Cavaliers down. Bang bang. That awful sound.
He shot them down with a team-high 23 points. Pierce has now scored at least 20 points in the Celtics’ first game in each of the last 11 seasons. Yowza! That’s the second-longest streak for any player in NBA history. Karl Malone holds the record. He scored 20-or-more points in his team’s season-opener in 12 straight seasons. Bob Lanier, who did that in 10 consecutive seasons, ranks third on the list.
It wasn’t just the 23 points that was so impressive. No. It’s the way he got them. At least it’s the way he got his final four points. Boston was holding on to a slim 87-83 lead with just 1:02 to go. That’s when Paul Pierce stood up. Like Travis Bickle always says, “Listen, you f**kers, you screwheads. Here is a man who would not take it anymore. A man who stood up against the scum, the dogs, the filth, the shit. Here is a man who stood up.”
Paul Pierce stood up. He stood up and knocked down two jump shots. Stood up and knocked down two big jump shots. Two back breaking jump shots. Two back breaking jump shots that put the Cavs out of their misery. That’s what champions do. And that’s the double truth, Ruth!
