Roll Red Sox Roll

Sometimes everything is wrong. Now it’s time to sing along. When your day is night alone, hold on. If you feel like letting go, hold on. When you think you’ve had too much of this life, well hang on. -REM

Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go!  I keep hearing this is the Yankees year.  I keep hearing they cannot lose.  All day long at school I hear how great the Yankees are at this or how wonderful the Yankees did that!  Yankees, Yankees, Yankees!  I’m not biting. I’m like Admiral Farragut. I say, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!”  I’m like Dylan Thomas.  I say, “Do not go gentle into these good playoffs.  I say, “Rage, rage against the naysayers. Rage, rage against the not today sayers.”  I say, “This is our night.”  I say, “We will get our title shot outdoors at the ballpark.”  What do the Yankees get?  A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville!  That’s what! Ha ha ha!

This is no time to get complacent, Red Sox fans. This no time to rest on your laurels. Maybe you’re like Denis Leary. Maybe you say, “If they don’t win this year, I don’t care.  I’ve got my championship…I’m done.” Not me.  I ain’t done.  Not by a longshot.  You need get down or lay down.  I’m not laying down brother.  And neither should you be.

Why would you?  The Sox have the best pitching staff in these here playoffs.  Like the man says, “Pitching wins championships.” Like the man says, “You’re only as good as your next starter.”  He should have said next three starters.  Three is a magic number.  Yes it is, it’s a magic number.  Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity, you get three as a magic number.  The Red Sox next three starters are Josh Boom Boom Beckett, Big Jon Lester and Dice-K Matsuzaka, he’s gy-ro-mite!

Boom Boom Beckett is this generation’s Bob Gibson.  This generation’s best big game pitcher.  The best big game pitcher I’ve ever seen.  The best big game pitcher there’s ever been.  The best big game pitcher from here to Abelene.  Boom Boom was a World Series MVP in 2003 with Florida and is 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA in the postseason.  Boom Boom, out go the lights!  And you saw him in 2007, right?  Right?  There’s no one in baseball I’d rather have toeing the rubber in a Game One.  Not CC Sabathia, not no one.

Big Jon Lester earned his 15th win of the season the other night.  He won it by throwing 6.1 innings in Boston’s 3-0 win over Cleveland.  Big Jon Lester had 16 wins last year.  You know what that makes him?  That makes him the first Boston lefthander with consecutive seasons of 15 or more wins since Bruce Hurst did it back in 1987 and 1988 .  You what else that makes him?  That makes him a force to be recokened with.  A force, who in his young career, already has a 2-2 record with a 1.95 ERA as a postseason starter.  That’s what it makes him.

Then there’s Dice-K. Then there’s the new and improved Dice-K.  The new and improved Dice-K who finished his regular season far better than he started it.  He finished it by limiting Cleveland to five hits and two runs over six innings.  In his four-start return, Matsuzaka went 3-1 with a 2.22 ERA. In his four-start return, he spotted his fastbal.  He spotted his fastball with surgeonlike percision.  But most importantly, he had great command of his secondary stuff.  He’s delightful, he’s delicious, he’s delectable, he’s delirious, he’s de limit, he’s deluxe, he’s de-lovely, he’s D-Nice although he hates to admit it, he’s taking out you suckers and you don’t know how he did it

So fear thee not Red Sox fans, the Olde Towne Team will prove victorious.  This is a team of destiny.  These are not your Daddy’s Red Sox.  These are the never say die Red Sox.  The never can say good-bye Red Sox.  These are the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie Red Sox.  That’s amore!  So hold your head up high.  Stick out you chest.  Keep Hope Alive.  Keep Hope alive!  Today the Angels.  Tomorrow the world.  Series that is.  Swimmin’ pools, movie stars.  Y’all come back now, y’hear?
