Overture, curtains, lights; this is it, you’ll hit the heights. Tonight what heights we’ll hit; on with the show this is it! -Bugs Bunny
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Like my main man Terry Malloy always says, “My night! I coulda taken Wilson apart! So what happens? He gets the title shot outdoors on the ballpark and what do I get? A one-way ticket to Palooka-ville!” The Yankees better take Wilson apart tonight. Tonight the Yankees have their best last shot riding on the big left arm of CC Sabathia.
This is the hard part of being a baseball fan. The keeps you on your guard part about being a baseball fan. The trump card part of being a baseball fan. Team trumps player. Sure I’ve made fun of CC, but that’s only since he’s been a Yankee, or about to be become a Yankee. Team trumps player.
Having said all that, if the New York Yankees, with CC toeing the rubber against Brad Penny, don’t win tonight, they ain’t never gonna win. Know this sports fans: The Red Sox’ seven straight wins against the Yankees in 2009 is the longest winning streak versus the Bronx Bombers for any major-league team to begin a season since the Orioles won their first seven games against the Yankees in 1997. Big deal you say? So what you say? I’ll tell you so what.
I’ll tell you that 1997 Oriole team had guys like Spittin’ Bobby Alomar. Guys like Finger Waggin’ Rafael Palmiero. And his boy, Brady Anderson. Wait, this wasn’t the way this was supposed to go. Yes they had guys like Mike Mussina and Cal Ripken, but my godness! That team made it to the ALCS. Not as glamorous as I hoped, but you know what I’m sayin.’
I’m saying it’s up to CC. It’s up to CC to make amends. To make amends for guys like AJ Burnett. To make amends for guys like Chien Ming Wang. As much as been said about Papi’s downfall; which one hurts more? Papi in the line-up? Or Wang in the rotation?
Last night, Chien-Ming Wang allowed four runs in 2 2/3 innings pitched. Mr. Wang, no offense, has an ERA as a starting pitcher is of 21.60. Since 1913, that’s the highest earned run average for any major league pitcher through his first five starts of a season. Tell me that’s not worse than Papi’s .196.
Tonight CC goes up against Brad Penny. Tonight CC goes up against a guy who probably won’t even be on the team, much less in the rotation, when all is said and done. Tonight CC takes the hill for the very reason Big and Little Enos Burdette paid him all that money to take the hill. So CC? What say you?
Public Spectacle:
Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
Need More? Boston Red Sox, CC Sabathia, MLB, New York Yankees
