Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Rookie rookie who gets the cookie? Huh? Vinnie, that’s who. Vinnie’s the big winner. Vinnie wins. Yesterday, the Oakland Athletics had only two hits. Yesterday, the Oakland Athletics still managed to defeat the Orioles 3-0. Know this sports fans: Yesterday was only the second time in the last eleven seasons that the A’s won a game with as few as two hits. Know this too: The A’s have Vin Mazzaro to thank for that milestone.
Vin Mazzaro was not a highly touted recruit. He was no Todd Van Poppel. He was no Brien Taylor. No Stephen Strasburg he. Vin Mazzaro was a third round draft pick. Folks thought both his breaking ball and changeup needed work. Folks did like his 90 MPH sinker. Folks did like his makeup. Word on the street was he knew how to prepare and execute in order to frustrate hitters. Word on the street now is, he does a good job of frustrating hitters.
Yesterday, Vin Mazzaro pitched 7 1/3 shutout innings in his second major-league appearance. The kid has not allowed a run in 13 2/3 innings since joining the club. Goodness! Over the last thirty-one seasons, the only other pitcher to accumulate more than thirteen innings without being charged with a run over his first two games in the majors was Cleveland’s Scott Lewis. I know it’s early. I know Scott Lewis has only pitched 14.1 innings since he accomplished his feat. I know and I don’t care. I’ve watched Vin Mazzaro. I like what I see.
Public Spectacle:
Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
Need More? MLB, Oakland A's, Vin Mazzaro
