Just Another Night In Titletown

You’ll be swell!  You’ll be great!  Gonna have the whole world on the plate!  Starting here, starting now.  Honey, everything’s coming up roses!  -Ethel Merman

Public Service Announcement:  OK, here we go!  For Boston, for Boston, thy glory is our own.  For Boston, for Boston, ’tis here that truth is known.  The truth is there is no better time to be a Boston sports fan.  If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times, there’s nothing better than blogging when your teams are winning.  My teams are winning.  Winning big.

Last night my teams won big.  Last night, Boston Sports Nation had three big games on the docket.  Count ‘em.  Three.  Three is a magic number.  Yes it is, it’s a magic number.  Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity, you get three as a magic number.  Magically delicious.

Last night the reigning champeens of the world, the Boston Celtics, snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.  Last night, Glen Davis, the baby-faced assassin, shed his diapers with a feathery touch on a 21- foot jumper to beat the horn and the Magic 95-94.  During two seasons with the Celtics, Big Baby had never before taken a potential game-tying or go-ahead shot from the floor in the final ten seconds of the fourth quarter or an overtime period in either a regular-season or a postseason game.  Welcome to titletown

Last night, the Big Bad Bruins staved off elimination and the Carolina Hurricanes in a 4-0 blowout.  Last night, the Bruins stayed alive with a 4-0 blowout over the Hurricanes, equaling the largest shutout margin that Boston ever posted when facing playoff elimination. The Bruins won two previous potential elimination games by a 4-0 score: against the Montreal Maroons in 1937 and the Capitals in 1998.  Welcome to titletown.

Last night Jonathon Papelbon and the Boston Red Sox rained on the Ray Pride ParadeJason Bay, the anti-Manny, doubled home the go-ahead run in the eighth to set the stage for Papelbon.  Jonathan Papelbon pitched himself into trouble but then pitched himself right out of it again.  You put your right foot in, you put your right foot out.  You put your right foot in, and you shake it all about.  You do the Hokey-Pokey and you turn yourself around.  That’s what it’s all about!

After putting the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position, Pap struck out three consecutive batters.  That’s what it’s all about.  Papelbon was the first pitcher in twenty years to earn a save by recording three straight strikeouts to end a game with the tying run 90 feet away.  The last pitcher to do so was Mitch Williams in his debut for the Cubs back in 1989.  Welcome to titletown.

I’m no prophet and I don’t know nature’s ways, so I’ll try and see into your eyes right now.  Stay right here ’cause these are the good old days.  Yes Boston fans, these are the good old days.  Enjoy them while they last.  Relish them.  Drink them in.  It doesn’t get any better than this.  And it’s not even Tom Brady season yet.  Roll Boston, roll!

Public Spectacle

Peace out homies.  Six two and Even!

Share the love baby!
