There’s no business like show business like no business I know. There’s no people like show people, they smile when they are low. Let’s go on with the show! -Ethel Merman
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Yesterday, I got to do something I never did before. Yesterday, I got to do my first interview. Hooray me! I did my first interview with Bill Patrick. You may know Bill from his work on Versus’ Hockey Central. You may know Bill from his work on ESPN’s Baseball Tonight or Sports Center. Heck, you may even know Bill from his work on ABC’s Spin City. Whatever you know Bill Patrick from, know this, Bill Patrick is a gamer.
In these here playoffs, much has been made of Boston Bruins defenseman Matt Hunwick. Hunwick played Game One against the Montreal Canadiens with a ruptured spleen. That’s nothing. Like my main Buford T. Justice always says, “Bank robbery?! Bank robbery is baby shit compared to what this dude’s doin!”
On Wednesday, the day before the playoffs, Bill Patrick was at home doing some yardwork. Actually some tree work. He was up on a ladder cutting down some limbs and according to Bill, “The last thing I remember, I was just about through the limb I was working on. Next thing I know, I wake up on the ground.” Next thing you know, he woke up with some busted ribs. Next thing you know, he woke up with some busted fingers. Next thing you know, he woke up with a bruised lung. Youch!
When I spoke with Bill yesterday, he was on his way to the Doctor. Doctor doctor, give me the news. When I spoke with Bill yesterday, he said every day experiences a new pain. He said, “It’s tough to move. It’s tough to breathe. I just sit in my chair and try not to move too much. At one point I began to hyperventilate. I thought my chest was going to explode. If I had a real job, I’d be in trouble.”
Now, I watch a lot of hockey. Ergo, I watch a lot of Versus. Ergo, I watch a lot of Bill Patrick. If he had not told me about this, I never would have known. But that’s what gamers do. They game. Just like Matt Hunwick gamed. Or like Rick DiPietro who weathered four first-round playoff games against the vaunted Buffalo Sabres with a torn hip and the after-effects of two concussions. Or like Sidney Crosby, who battled through a five-game series against Ottawa on a broken foot. Bill Patrick knows what those guys know. Bill Patrick knows the show must go on.
Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
