I’ve lived a life thats full. I’ve traveled each and every highway. And more, much more than this, I did it my way. -Frank Sinatra
MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (JQP): Like my main man, or at least Cousins of Ron Mexico’s main man, Hunter S. Thompson, always says, “Faster, faster, faster, until the thrill of speed overcomes the fear of death.” That my friends, was Andrea Mead Lawrence’s mantra. Andrea Mead Lawrence was a skier. Andrea Mead Lawrence was very good skier. In 1952 , Andrea Mead Lawrence became the only American skier to win two gold medals in a single Winter Olympics. How about that? How about this? At age fourteen, she made the US national team. At age fifteen, she was competing in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Four years later, in Oslo, she was named captain. O Captain my Captain! our fearful trip is done. The ship has weathered every rack, the prize we sought is won. The prize Andrea Mead Lawrence sought was gold. She won it all right. In Oslo at the 1952 Olympics, she wrested gold from its long hold in European hands. USA! USA! USA! Andrea Mead-Lawrence died Monday of a rare form of cancer at her home in Mammoth Lakes, Calif. She’d been diagnosed in 2000 with leiomyosarcoma, a cancer of thesmooth-muscle cells. Rest in peace.
