Coach Cal Has Sights Set On Kentucky

Big time.  I’m on my way, I’m making it.  Big time.  I’ve got to make it show, yeah.  Big time.  So much larger than life.  -Peter Gabriel

Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go!  In his first seventeen seasons as a collegiate head coach, John Calipari’s has a record of 446–139.  His record in the NCAA Tournament is 25–10. His teams have made eleven NCAA tournament appearances, including reaching the Sweet Sixteen seven times, the Elite Eight five times, the Final Four twice, and the championship game once.  You shouldn’t grab me, Johnny.  My mother grabbed me once…Once!  John Calipari wants more.  John Calipari has his sights set on Kentucky.

Andy Katz of ESPN.com is reporting that John Calipari met with Kentucky officials Sunday about coaching the Wildcats.  I don’t blame him.  Mo Vaughn once said, “It’s not about the money.”  I have always disagreed.  I have always contended it’s always about the money.  This time, I’m going with Mo.  This time I think it’s about something more.

Coach Cal just may be the best coach in college basketball.  While toiling in the A-10 with UMass, Calipari took the Minutemen to 193-71 in eight seasons.  He took a team who had seen no glory since the days of Dr. J to an Elite Eight appearance in ’95 and a trip to the Final Four in ’96.

While toiling in C-USA with Memphis, Calipari, he took the Tigers to 252-69 in nine seasons.  This year he was named the Sports Illustrated Coach of the Year.  Last year, he was the Naismith Coach of the Year.  He just coached Memphis into the Sweet Sixteen after losing three key players from last year’s Final’s team.

While toiling in the mid-majors, Coach Cal has taken teams farther then they’ve ever gone before.  It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.  The Kentucky job is the next logical step.  Like the man says, “If Mohammed won’t come to the mountain, the mountain must come to Mohammed.”

Public Spectacle

Peace out homies.  Six two and Even!
