SWIFTON, AR (JQP) – George Clyde Kell - Hiya Tigers’ fans. Biya George Kell. Tuesday, eighty-six year-old Hall of Fame third baseman George Kell died in his sleep at his home. For those of you don’t know, George Kell was a ballplayer. For those of you don’t know, George Kell was one heck of a ballplayer. For those of you don’t know, George Kell will forever be known as the man who beat Ted Williams.
George Kell was a ten time All-Star. He hit .300 in eight straight seasons. For a moment in time, he was one of the best hitters in baseball. In 1949, he was the best hitter in baseball. In 1949, in one of the most hotly contested races for the batting title, he edged Ted Wiiliams by less than a hundredth of a point. 1949, in one of the most hotly contested races for the batting title, he robbed Ted Williams of a would be record third Triple Crown during the last game of the season. George Kell beat the best. To be the man, you gotta beat the man. Wooooooo! Rest in peace, George Kell. Rest in peace. This should be the ballgame… it is.
