If it weren’t for Whitey Lockman, there would be no Shot Heard Round The World. If it weren’t for Whitey Lockman, there would be no Bobby Thomson to pick up. The Giants trailed 4-1 in the ninth. Alvin Dark and Don Mueller’s singles put runners at the corners. Monte Irvin fouled out. Whitey Lockman smashes an RBI double. Whitey Lockman leaves two runners on for Thomson. The rest, is history.
Whitey Lockman was fighting pulmonary fibrosis. Whitey Lockman died Tuesday at the Mayo Clinic Hospital. He was 82.
