Winthrop Basketball: End Of An Era

Of our elaborate plans, the end.  Of everything that stands, the end.  No safety or surprise, the end.  I’ll never look into your eyes…again.  -The Doors

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  When you think of perennial powerhouses in college basketball, you don’t generally think of the Winthrop EaglesUCLA?  Yes.  But Winthrop?  Duke?  Sure.  But Winthrop?  UConn?  Of course.  But Winthrop?  Going into the Big South Conference Tournament opener last night, Winthrop had won each of its last twelve games in Big South Tourney play.  Big deal you say?  So what you say?  I’ll tell you so what.

I’ll tell you that was the longest streak ever in the Big South Conference Tournament.  Furthermore, I’ll tell you it was the longest current winning streak in conference tournament play among all teams in any conference.  All teams.  Any conference.  But alas, like all good things, it has come to an end.

Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of college basketball teams.  The torch has been passed to to Kansas (Big 12), Memphis (Conference USA), Davidson (Southern), Oral Roberts (Summit), and Belmont (Atlantic Sun).  The torch has been passed to those teams there.  Teams, each of which, currently own a nine-game winning streak their respective conference tournament.  It was nice run Winthrop, now go get your shine box!

Public Spectacle:

Peace out homies.  Six two and Even!
