Reveille

Sixers 99  Pacers 94:  Yes Virginia, there was another basketball game last night.  Actually two other games.  But who’s counting?  Me, that’s who.  I’m counting all the ways the Sixers won without Elton Brand.

Five.  Five ways.  Five the hard way.  Last was the first game in three years in which all five Sixers starters scored at least thirteen points.  Five players on the floor functioning as one single unit.  Team, team, team.  No one more important that the other.  That’s not true.  Andre Iguodala is more important than the others.

Last night, Iggy scored twenty.  He scored twenty or more points in only three of his first twenty-six games this season but he’s done so 16 times in 22 games since then.  He’s gonna have to keep that if the Sixers even want to sniff the playoffs without Brand.

Panthers 3  Islanders 2:  Like the man says, the best offense is a good defense.  Case in point, the Florida Panthers.  Last night, defensemen Jay Bouwmeester and Karlis Skrastins scored the first two goals for the Panthers in their 3-2 win over the Islanders.  Florida has a league-high thirty-six goals this season from defensemen. Not bad, right?  This ain’t too bad either.  The Panthers have had at least one goal by a defenseman in eleven of their fourteen games since New Years.  Yowza!

Big Bad Bruins 4  Senators 3:  Normally, I would take this space to brag about the Big Bad Bruins.  To brag about the best team in hockey.  Not today.  Today I’m gonna talk about Cory Clouston.  Senators new head coach Cory Clouston.  Meet the new boss.  Same as the old boss.  The Senators scored their first goal for the new boss at the 15:54 mark of the second period in his second game last night against the Bruins.

Big deal you say?  Who cares you say?  I say, In the NHL’s modern era, the only man to go deeper into his coaching career than Clouston (95:54) without his team scoring a goal was Charlie Conacher.  Never heard of Conacher?  That’s because he coached a long time ago.  A real long time ago.  Decades ago.  Eons ago.  Conacher took over as coach of the Blackhawks in the middle of the 1947-48 season and had to wait 117:10 until a Chicago player scored a goal.

Peace out homies.  Six two and Even!
