Rocky Marciano, Meet Joe Calzaghe

I’m the king of rock, there is none higher, sucker MC’s should call me sire.  To burn my kingdom, you must you must use fire.  I won’t stop rockin’ till I retire.  -Run DMC

Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go!  Big news, big news.  Big boxing news.   According to the London Times, Joe Calzaghe, the undefeated world super middleweight and light heavyweight champion and the longest reigning world title holder in boxing history, has announced his retirement.  I remember those cheers, they still ring in my ears.  After years, they remain in my thoughts.  Yowza!  I didn’t see this one coming.

If boxing is the sweet science, Joe Calzaghe may just go down as the sweetest scientist of them all.  Dropping science like Galileo dropped the orange.  The Italion Dragon.  Joe Calzaghe.  Undefeated Joe Calzaghe.  Undisputed Joe Calzaghe.  Forty-six wins.  Thirty-two by knockout.  Mama says knock you out.

He didn’t knock out Roy Jones Jr., but boy did he throw him a beating.  I guess that was enough.  What else is there?  Calzaghe has decided there is nothing left for him to prove in the sport.  Calzaghe:  “It was a difficult decision but I have achieved everything I wanted to achieve in boxing.  I’ve been world champion for 11 years.  I’ve got no other goals to go for.  That’s why I am calling it a day.”

In this day and age when we see far too many athletes hanging on, I applaud Joe Calzaghe.  I only wish I was paying more attention.  I wish I was paying more attention to Joe as he exerted his dominance throughout the boxing world.  Exerted his dominance over Bernard Hopkins.  Exerted his dominance over Mikkel Kessler.  Exerted his dominance over Dane Kessler.  Exerted his dominance over Jeff Lacy.  Exerted his dominance for eighteen long hard years.  Johnny Wad Holmes years.

Joe Calzaghe now joins Rocky Marciano in the pantheon.  Even though he won the coveted BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, we never really appreciated him this side of the pond.  That’s a shame.  There goes Joe Calzaghe.  There goes one of the greatest fighters who ever lived.

Public Spectacle:

Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
