Sometimes you wake up in the morning with the bass line. A ray of sunshine. -Wham
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Meet your newest Tampa Bay Ray. Meet Pat Burrell. He, formerly of the reigning Champions of the World. He, formerly of the Philadelphia Phillies. Yes Virginia, that Pat Burrell.
Pat Burrell, formerly of the World Champion Phillies, signed with the American League Champion Rays. Big deal you say? Who cares you say? I say only three players in major league history played for the winning team in the World Series and began the following season for the team they beat in said World Series
The imitable Frenchy Fuqua Bordagaray of the 1941 Yankees went on to play for Dem Bums in 1942. Good ole Frenchy had already played in a World Series with the Reds before he came to play with the Yankees. He never made it back.
Don Gullett was a major cog in the Big Red Machine in 1976 before he arrived at Fort Apache, the Bronx. Gullet playing for only nine seasons. Gullett was a member of six World Series teams. Gullet won four straight. Baseball’s version 0f Big Shot Bob Horry.
Gary Thomasson was a nobody on the 1978 Yankees. Gary Thomasson was a nobody on the 1979 Dodgers. His reward? He was signed with great fanfare and to the biggest contract ever given to a player in the Nippon League, Japan. He was a nobody in Japan too. He came close to setting the league strikeout record and then blew out his knee to end his career.
And there you have it.
The Phillies Off-Season gets Worse (Crashburn Alley)
