Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Please no. Like my main Mars Blackman always says, “Please baby, please baby, please baby, baby baby please!” Now I love laundry as much as the next guy. Probably more so. Nobody circles the wagons like the Buffalo Bills Josh Q. Public. But this?
According to Marc Stein and ESPN, “signals are getting stronger that the New York Knicks’ outcast will eventually make his comeback with the Boston Celtics.” Egads man! I understand there are concerns about depth after losing James Posey and P.J. Brown. I understand losing three out of four on the road hurts. I understand Sam Cassell will never play meaningful minutes again. I understand they’re going to have to make a move. Make a move. Hudson Honda style. I get it. I do. But this guy?
It’s like deja vu all over again. John Y. Brown all over gain. Bob McAdoo all over again. Sidney Wicks. Curtis Rowe. Guys like that there. I know Marbury and Kevin Garnett have played together before. I also know Marbury said this when comparing the Big Ticket to Amar’e Stoudemire: “Not to take nothing away from Kevin. He was a great talent coming out of high school. But…It’s not even close. He doesn’t even compare to Amare. It’s two different people. It’s like Michael Jordan and Mario Elie. It’s not even close.” Are you kidding me? That’s the guy you want on this team?
Having said all that, if Starbury does come to Boston I will support him. He will become my twelfth favorite player in the league. It’s unfortunate, but that’s what happens when you’re an insufferable homer. Doh! Until then, I will fight this with every fiber of my being.

Need More? Boston Celtics,NBA,New York Knicks,Stephon Marbury

It’s crazy enough that it just might work. It’s hard to defend Marbury (trust me I’ve tried) after he refused to play for the Knicks. But by all accounts, he came into camp in great shape. He wasn’t a distraction until the Knicks decided to bench him in the season opener. Maybe that was the right decision, maybe not, but I think he could help Boston.
Boston will provide the perfect atmosphere for him. KG won’t put up with his antics, and after winning a ring, he has the credibility to do whatever he wants in that locker room. If it doesn’t work, release him.
Not with his upside. Look, I know people have been preaching about Marbury’s talent throughout his career and I’m probably the only guy in the country that thinks this can work, but if I’m Ainge, I pull the trigger on this one. What do you have to lose? You have a group of veteran players who will put a stop to any disruptive behavior. If it doesn’t work, cut your losses (the veterans minimum) and move on. If he’s nothing else, Marbury is a fighter. The guy has overcome a lot to reach the NBA and he’s facing the biggest challenge of his career. If he screws up again, he’s out of the league. Again, call me crazy, but I’m not betting against him this time.
Hey Hoff,
I hope you’re right because it sure enough looks like it’s about to happen. If there’s any locker room it would work, you’re right, it’s this one. But dear god, isnt anybody else available?
wow! you got me giddy now. I’ve always hated starbury. always. but in green and after what you’ve just said, i want him too. long live starbury! and just so you know, you are crazy. but you’re also pretty good about these things.
Lol. Thanks Josh. I don’t think Marbury can excel on a young team. I’ll admit, he’s got some issues. But the Celtics have the perfect atmosphere. Doc Rivers is a great motivator. Maybe he can strike a chord with Marbury. And you know KG, Pierce and Ray-Ray will have a positive impact on him. Worst case scenario: you release him after a month or two. But I just don’t see how he could wreak havoc on a team like the Celtics.
It would be different if you had a deep bench, but you don’t. Both the Lakers and Celtics have been able to cut their starters’ workloads this season. KG, Pierce and Allen are playing as many minutes as last season. Marbury fills a need.
