Chris Chelios: Winning In A Winter Wonderland

A beautiful sight.  We’re happy tonight.  Skating in a winter wonderland.  -The Andrew Sisters

Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go!  Call him the Lion in Winter.  Like King Henry II himself, Chris Chelios knows “exactly what you will do, and exactly what you won’t.  To those aged eyes, boy, that’s what winning looks like!”  Chris Chelios is what winning looks like.

There he was.  There was Chris Chelios.  There was Chris Chelios on hockey’s biggest stage.  Bigger even than the Stanley Cup.  As Chris Chelios entered Wrigley Field on his skate guards, taking that long walk and a flight of stairs, he set out to do what he has done as much as anybody else in this sport.  He set out to win a hockey game.

There have been many records set or tied at Wrigley Field since it opened in 1914, but before yesterday’s Winter Classic, they were all baseball or football marks.  When Detroit beat Chicago, it marked the 879th time that Red Wings defenseman Chris Chelios played on the winning team in a regular-season game.  That tied the NHL record held by Scott Stevens.  A record that will be his and his alone before too long.

Chris Chelios has been at this game a long time.  His first win came in his first game, a 3-2 victory by the Montreal Canadiens over the Hartford Whalers at the Montreal Forum on March 8, 1984, twenty-five years ago.  His teammates in that game were guys like Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson and Bob Gainey.  Old time hockey guys.  Eddie Shore guys.  Legendary guys.  That’s a long time.  That’s a lot of wins.  That’s a lot of hockey.  That’s a lot of Chris Chelios.

Public Spectacle:

Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
