Steve Mason: Three Is A Magic Number

Save me.  Save me.  Save me.  I can’t face this life alone.  Save me.  Save me.  Oh, I’m naked and I’m far from home.  -Queen

Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go!  In the spirit of today’s NHL Winter Classic, I give you Steve Mason.  Rookie Steve Mason.  Columbus Blue Jacket rookie goaltender Steve Mason.  Rookie rookie, who gets the cookie?  Stevie does.  I’m gonna ask you a simple question and I want you to listen to me: who’s the big winner here tonight at the casino?  Huh?  Stevie, that’s who.  Stevie’s the big winner.  Stevie wins.

Stevie’s been winning a lot lately.   Three in a row.  Three shutouts in a row.  Three is a magic number.  Yes it is, it’s a magic number.  Somewhere in the ancient, mystic trinity, you get three as a magic number.  How magical?  Glad you asked.  The only other rookie to record shutouts in three consecutive starts during the NHL’s modern era was Glenn Hall with the Black Hawks back in 1955.  Fifty-four years?  Pretty darn magical.

Wanna hear something else magical?  Not real magical, but kinda magical.  Steve Mason wears the number one.  So did the aforementioned Black Hawks’ Glen Hall.  So did the Red Wings’ Terry Sawchuck.  Those two teams retired those two guys’ numbers.  Those two teams play in today’s Winter Classic.  Those two teams play in today’s Winter Classic on 1/1.  Kinda magical, right?

Peace out homies. Six two and Even!
