Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Fire up that hot stove. You say you don’t like it, but girl I know you’re a liar, ’cause when we kiss, fire. Really? Cesar Izturis? Really? I know they’re still working on Mark Teixeira, but they could have done better than this. For a team that’s been so weak at shortstop, they had to do better than this.
The Orioles signed Cesar Izturis yesterday. .263 Cesar Izturis. All right, Izturis may not be an offensive star, but he can’t be any worse than what they’ve had. Nothing could be that bad. The Orioles in 2008 had the weakest hitting shortstop corps in a long, long time. Their .218 batting average was the worst by any MLB team’s shortstops since the Brewers hit .218 in 2003. Their on-base percentage of .259 was the lowest since the 1999 Angels (.256). And their slugging percentage was .276, the worst in the majors since 1991, when the Dodgers (.269) and Angels (.274) were lower. Cesar Itzuris you say? I say they should have done better.
