When days go by, there’s room for you, room for me, for gentle hearts an opportunity. As days go by, it’s the bigger love of the family. -Family Matters
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Oh brother. O Brother where art thou? At the All Star Game, that’s where. For the first time in the history of the NFL’s annual all-star game in Hawaii, two brothers will be playing quarterback in the game. Now that’s pretty cool. Not to be left out, their father, Archie Manning, was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1978 and 1979. That’s even cooler. If there’s a first family of football, this is it.
They’re not the only ones. Not lonely ones. There have been other All Star families in this wide wonderful wacky world of sports. Wanna hear some? Sure you do.
The Boone Family: Ray Boone was an All Star infielder for the Detroit Tigers. Ray begot Bob. Bob Boone caught for nineteen seasons in the majors. An All Star himself. Bob begot and Brett “Shhh don’t tell anybody” Boone. Both All Stars themselves. You know what the gives you? That gives you the only three-generation baseball family in which every member was an All-Star. That gives you something special.
The Barry Family: Love him or hate him, Rick Barry just may be the greatest pure small forward of all time. Love him or hate him, Rick Barry was one helluva basketball Player. One helluva basketball player. He was Rookie of the Year. He was an eight time All Star. A Finals MVP. An All Star MVP. The man could fill it up. Rick Barry has four sons, Scooter, Jon, Brent, Drew, who are, or have been, professional basketball players. Brent won two NBA Championships with the jinglin’ janglin’ Spurs. That makes Rick and Brent only the second father-son duo to both win NBA Championships as players. That makes the Barry’s NBA’s first family.
The Howe Family: Gordie Howe. Mr. Hockey. Mr. Hockey is generally regarded as one of the greatest hockey players of all time. He could score. He could skate. He could fight. Is there a cooler accomplishment than the Gordie Howe hat trick? I think not. Gordie played hockey for a long time. A very long time. He is the only player to have competed in the NHL in five different decades. Yowza! Howe: Age has nothing to do with it. Heck, I played until I was fifty-two so I could play with my sons, Mark and Marty. In fact, at fifty-two, I was the leading scorer on the team until Christmas before they benched me.” Marty and Mark were his teammates on the Houston Aeros and the Hartford Whalers. Marty played in 1976 WHA All-Star Game. Mark did a little better. Mark played in the 1979 WHA All Star game and four NHL All Star games. Mark shone as one of the best two-way defensemen of the 1980. The Howes shine as the greatest hockey of all time.
Other Notable Families: The Aarons, The DiMaggios, The Alomars, The Bretts, The Niekros, The Alous, The Wilkins, The Grants, The Von Erichs, The Staals, The Niedermayers, The Espositos, The Valiants, The Cunninghams, The Bretts, The Bryants, The Mays, The Barbers, The Paxons, The Olsens, The Van Arsdales and The Waltons
