I guess all that talk about the Boston Celtics being complacent after their championship can be put to bed. I guess all those questions asking whether the Boston Celtics can stay hungry have been answered. The best basketball team in the world is off to their best start ever. And, when you’re the Boston Celtics, that’s saying something. Bill Russell, Larry Bird and Bob Cousy never were this good this early. They were never 21-2 good. Wilt and Clyde were. If these Celtics win six more, they will pass Wilt’s Sixers and Clyde’s Knicks for the best NBA start ever. Who’s gonna stop them?
The Celtics are in the midst of a thirteen game winning streak. Their longest winning streak since Bird himself. I know it was the lowly Wizards, but last night’s thirty-four point ass whuppin’ was the Celtics largest ass whuppin’ on the road over the last twenty-seven seasons. Yowza! Wanna know why they’ve been so good? Huh? Do ya? Sure you do. Ray Allen. That’s why.
That’s right, Ray Allen. Stella got her groove back. Now don’t get me wrong. The Celtics still play defense. Tom Thibodeau defense. The Celtics still contest every shot. They still trap in the corners. They still crash the boards. They still rebound, help, switch, basically everything that you expect your team to do on defense. They still do all that on a nightly basis. But this year, Ray Allen has been much more Ray Alleny.
Last night Ray Ray opened up the game with four threes in the first quarter. He’s been doing that stuff all season. He’s the Celtics leading scorer. He just seems so much more comfortable out there. Getting giddy in the zone. Don’t forget, once this cat was considered the best shooter in the world. Three point king. Record for most three-point field goals made in a regular season. Record for most seasons leading the league in three-point field goals made. Record for most three-point field goals made in one half. Record for most three-point field goals made in a single NBA Finals Game. Record for most three-point field goals made in an NBA Finals series. And with Ray Allen again doing what Ray Allen does best, nobody’s touching the Celtics.
