It’s better to burn out ’cause rust never sleeps. The king is gone but she’s not forgotten. -Neil Young
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! There they go. There go the Houston Comets. There but for the grace of God, goes the Houston Comets. There but for the grace of God, goes the best professional women’s basketball team ever assembled.
There were victory parades. There were swarms of screaming fans. There was ride after ride on the fire truck. Four consecutive rides on the fire truck. She’s got a ticket to ride, but she don’t care. My baby don’t care. Houston Comets fans care. They care because their team, the only dynasty ever in the WNBA, is no more.
After four-months of searching, the Comets were unable to secure new ownership. After four-months of searching, the Comets have been disbanded. Cynthia Cooper, Tina Thompson, Sheryl Swoopes and their band of merry women are all gone. Van Chancellor the coach of the Houston Comets from their inception in 1997 until January 2007: “It’s a real sad day.” Yes it Van, yes it is.
It would be like the New York Yankees folding. The Montreal Canadiens folding. The Dallas Cowboys folding. The Boston Celtics folding. Teams like that there. The Houston Comets are no more. A very sad day for basketball indeed.
Public Spectacle:
Peace out Comets. Six two and even!
Need More? Houston Comets, WNBA
