You’re simply the best, better than all the rest. Better than anyone, anyone I’ve ever met. -Tina Turner
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Like my main man Tommy Lasorda always says, “No matter how good you are, you’re going to lose one-third of your games. No matter how bad you are you’re going to win one-third of your games. It’s the other third that makes the difference.” It’s the other third that makes an MVP. The Most Valuable Player Award is an annual award given to one outstanding player in each league. Given to the guy who made the difference in that other one third.
Albert Pujols: One word. Redemption. Nobody thought Phat Albert could do it this year. Nobody. If you play fantasy baseball, you know what I’m talking about. How late did he go in your draft? Pujols started the season with his balky right elbow in question. Pujols played the entire season with said balky right elbow. Pujols tore up the National League with said balky right elbow.
You could say he didn’t he deserve it. You could say you think Ryan Howard deserved it. You could say since the BBWAA MVP awards were instituted in 1931, all twelve times a player who led the majors in both dings and RBIs while playing on a team that reached the postseason won the MVP. I’m not gonna. I’m not gonna say it.
El Hombre single-handedly kept the Cardinals in the wildcard race right up to the end of the season. El Hombre is a Gold Glove first baseman. Not many athletes mean as much to their teams as El Hombre does to his. El Hombre made the difference in that other one third.
Dustin Pedroia: My man! Dustin Perdroia, the Red Sox Destroyah. The jump for joyer. The wonder boyer. The real McCoyer. Better than Clete Boyer. Loved from here to Illinoiser. Whoa Nellie! Whoa Nellie Fox. Just add another one. Add another trophy to his already crowded mantle. Add one to the Rookie of the Year. Add one to the Gold Glove. Add one to the Silver Slugger. Add one to the World Series Ring. Add an American League MVP. Wooo dioggie!
That’s an awful lot of awards for the little guy. The little guy making the big splash. Splish splash I was taking a bath. Big Papi: “You don’t know how good this kid is, how tough this kid is. Nobody knows. I realize he’s a little guy, like 5-foot-3, but he plays like a giant.” Like Jett Rink. Sometimes, any man can be a giant.
Dustin Pedroia is not just any man. He had as many hits as hitting machine Ichiro Suzuki. Good enough for first in baseball. Most doubles in baseball. Get the papers, get the papers. More runs than Jose Reyes. More runs than Curtis Granderson. More runs than you can shake a stick at. More runs than anybody not named Hanley Ramirez. Having Dustin Pedroia near the top of that Boston Red Sox order meant as much to that team getting deep into playoffs the as anything else. As everything else. It meant the difference in that other one third.
