Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! I’ve been waiting for this day. Anticipating for the day. Ever since Ulf Samuelsson knee checked Cam Neely (Thank you Tie Domi), I’ve been waiting for a hockey player to come along that I could call my favorite.
I took on a surrogate in Alexander Ovechkin. He wasn’t a Bruin but he was the closest thing to Cam Neely I could find. He was just keeping the seat warm. A seat Joe Thornton was not man enough to occupy. A seat Milan Lucic will one day call a throne.
I love me a power forward. That’s why I loved Neely. That’s why I took in El Ocho as one of my own. That’s why Milan Lucic is my new favorite hockey player. Big and strong, Lucic almost gave up on hockey, thinking hockey gave up on him. Junior team after junior team passed him up during the draft. The Bruins took a chance. If you change your mind, I’m the first in line. Honey I’m still free. Take a chance on me. Lucic did not disappoint.
Practice after practice, preseason game after preseason game there was Lucic. All right, let’s show ‘em what we got, guys! Get out there on the ice and let ‘em know you’re there. Get that fuckin’ stick in their side. Let ‘em know you’re there! Get that lumber in his teeth. Let ‘em know you’re there! That’s just what Lucic did. He let folks know he was there.
Think Cam Neely. Think Rick Tocchet. Think Dale Hunter. Think Kevin Stevens. Think Mark Messier. Think guys like that there. Think fearless guys. Guys who play with passion. Guys who play with attitude. Guys who hustle. Guys who are willing to put their bodies out on the line. Milan Lucic is one of those guys. Don’t believe me?
