Although no titles have I won, I surely must be lonesome number one. -Roy Orbison
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Hockey talk. Hockey Krishnas rejoice! Hockey hockey. Krishna krishna.
You heard about Greg Oden. Heard that he played thirteen scoreless minutes last night. Heard that only two other players selected with the first overall pick of the draft failed to score a point in their NBA debuts. Heard that the others were Doug Collins and Yao Ming. But did you hear about Steven Stamkos?
Steven Stamkos was the first overall pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2008 NHL Draft. His vision is outstanding. His quickness unmatched. On the power play, he is a beast. His one timer is as breathtaking as NHL ’94. It’s in the game! He is a leader and will be a captain very quickly into his NHL career. Then what’s taking so long?
Last night, Stamkos got his first career point in the NHL. Got it with an assist. Got it in his eighth game. Big deal you say? Who cares you say? I say, since 1970, only two other #1 overall draft picks took at least eight games to record their first NHL point. I say only Joe Thornton of the Big Bad Bruins and Rick Green of the Caps took so long. But fear thee not Lightning fans, Thornton has himself an MVP while Green has a Stanley Cup championship under his belt. Patience is a virtue. This kid will be worth the wait.
