In Praise Of Ellis HobbsIn Praise Of Ellis Hobbs

You gotta run, run, run, run, run.  Take a drag or two.  Run, run, run, run, run.  Gypsy death and you.  Tell you whatcha do.  -Velvet Underground

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  I first became aware of the art of the return watching William Arthur Johnson.  That’s Billy White Shoes to you.  Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers, Houston Oilers number one!  Dancing his way into my heart.  Returning kicks his way into my heart.  From there on in, I’ve always held a soft spot for the return men of the gridiron.  For Mel Gray.  For Dave Meggett.  For Eric Metcalf.  For Neon Deion.  For guys like that there.  Guys that paved the way for the Reggie Bushes and Devin Hesters of today.  Guys who paved the way for my main man Ellis Hobbs.  Ellis Hobbs?  Yes, Ellis Hobbs.

Ellis Hobbs has been returning kicks for the New England Patriots for four seasons now.  He’s fearless.  He hits the holes.  He breaks some tackles.  And, he can take it to the hizzy.  Took it to the hizzy last year.  Last year, in the Patriots season opener, Hobbs returned a kickoff for an NFL record 108 yards down in the swamps of Jersey against the J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets.  At the time, it was the longest play of any kind in league history.  Longest play.  Of any kind.  Yowza!  Ellis Hobbs has a career average of twenty-eight yards per kickoff return.  Big deal you say?  Who cares you say?  I say, that ranks fourth in NFL history.  I say, that is the highest career average by any player since the Kansas Comet himself.  Since Gayle Sayers.   Now that’s saying something.  That’s saying a lot.
