Hail to the Buff! Hail to the Blue! Hail to the Buff and Blue!
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! In a former life, I was a college wrestler. Not a very good one, but a wrestler none-the less. Better to have wrestled and lost than to have played basketball. My teammate was a good one. A very good one. A very very good one. The winningest wrestler in the history of college wrestling. More winningester than Cael Sanderson. More winningester than Dan Gable. More winningester than anybody.
Throughout his GWU Colonials career, Wade Hughes won twenty individual tournament titles. Throughout his GWU Colonials career, Wade Hughes won two NCAA regional crowns. He took third in the 126-pound weight class at the 1985 NCAA Championships in Oklahoma City. His only loss was to a 1984 Olympic silver medallist (Barry Davis of Iowa) in the tournament semifinals. He was selected for the prestigious East-West All-Star Meet in ‘85 and won his 130-pound match in Utah. Wade was a beast. Threw folks around like a rag doll. Called her rag doll, little rag doll. Such a pretty face, should be dressed in lace.
Following his GW years, Hughes trained with United States national team for two years as an assistant coach at Northern Michigan University and represented the U.S. in several international tournaments. He was assistant coach at Howard University for 11 years (‘89-2000) and then served as head coach of the Bison for two seasons (2001 and ‘02). Head coach of one of the last Historically Black Colleges that offered intercollegiate wrestling. Now, only Delaware State remains as Howard, Coppin State, Morgan State and Norfolk State have all dropped the sport in the last ten years. Enter Wade Hughes. Knock ‘em out the box, Wade. Knock ‘em out.
