We are here and now. Further than that, all knowledge is moonshine. -HL Mencken
Public Knowledge:
- Derek Jeter broke Lou Gehrig’s record for career hits at Yankee Stadium. If a tree falls in the forest….
- Phil Hughes to pitch tonight for Bombers. See above.
- He’s all Manny. Manny Ramirez was 3-for-5 last night in the Dodgers’ 6-2 win over the Buccos. That brought his batting average with dem Bums up to .401. Dem bums, dem bums, dem dry bums. Oh they may be bums, but they’re my bums. If Manny can keeps this up for the next twelve days, he’ll become the first player to hit .400 in the National League in a season of at least 150 at-bats since Memphis Bill Terry hit .401 in a full season for the 1930 Giants. Yowza!
- Not for nothing, how great would a Sox/Dodgers Series be? Manny, Nomah and D-Lowe versus their old team? The thrills. The spills. Oh, the humanity!
- Yes the Sox fell back out of first last place last night, but know this sports fans, Boom Boom Beckett is back. Be afraid. be very very afraid. He was blowing away batters with the cheese. Sharp cheddar, my rhymes are better. His nasty Uncle Charlie was never nastier. Even though the Sox offense could not help a brother out against the Rays, baseball has just been on notice. Playoffs baby, playoffs. Gibson, Smoltz, Schilling and Boom Boom.
- Has anyone been doing more to help his lately than Ryan Howard? Manny’s up there, but Howard has been an outright beast. I’ll never be your beast of burden. My back is broad, but it’s a hurting. Howard’s back should be hurting after last night. Last night Ryan Howard was 4-for-5 with a triple, a game winning bomb and three RBIs as the Fightin’ Phils won by a hair in Atlanta. A win that moved into first place in the National League East. It’s now time to add Ryan Howard’s name to the NL MVP discussion.
- Back in ’04, Derek Lowe posted a 3-0 record and 1.86 ERA in four games, three of them starts, during the postseason. He was the winner, winner, chicken dinner in the final game of all three postseason series. The winner, winner, chicken dinner of the American League Division Series against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The winner, winner, chicken dinner of the American League Championship Series against the Yankees. And the winner, winner, chicken dinner of the World Series against the Red Birds as the Sox won their first Series in 86 years. The only pitcher in baseball history to accomplish this feat. How about that? How about this? D-Lowe allowed a meager one run over seven innings in the Dodgers’ 6-2 win at Pittsburgh last night. Since August 15, Lowe is 5-1 and his 1.13 ERA is the best in the majors over that span, ahead of Roy Oswalt. Is this the guy you wanna face in the playoffs? I thought not.
- Speaking of Oswalt. Roy Oswalt had not allowed a run in any of his last three starts. Any. Not one. Zero. Zilch. Nada. S-dot-Carter, y’all must try harder. Competition is nada. A franchise-record streak of 32 1/3 scoreless innings. Not until last night. Not until he allowed four first-inning runs last night. Oswalt is only the fourth pitcher in major league history to allow four first-inning runs after entering a game on a streak of three straight scoreless starts of eight or more innings. David Cone, Frank Lary and Cy Young are the others.
- Beat the Mets. Beat the Mets. Step right up and beat the Mets. Bring your kiddies, bring your wife. Guaranteed to have the time of your life. If you’re a Phils or Brewers fan that is. No playoffs in the Big Apple? Look at me, I’m in tatters! I’m a shattered. Yikes! The revolution’s near. But to me it seems quite clear. That it’s all just a little bit of history repeating. The Mets went down quietly for the second game in a row to a team that began the night with the second-worst record in baseball. Not a good week for the Jets/Mets contingent. What did the Islanders do this week?
- Yankees still suck! Ha ha ha!!!!!
