NBA Draft: Cookin’ With The Heat

NBA Draft

Back in black.  I hit the sack.  It’s been too long.  I’m glad to be back.  -AC/DC

Public Service Announcement:  Ok, here we go!  The NBA Draft.  The Miami Heat.  Winner winner, chicken dinner.  You’re a big winner.  I’m gonna ask you a simple question and I want you to listen to me:  Who’s the big winner here tonight at the Garden?  Huh? The Heat, that’s who. The Heat’s the big winner.  The Heat wins.  And win big.

OJ Mayo this.  Derrick Rose that.  Feh!  Like my main man Red Auerbach always says:  “An acre of performance is worth a whole world of promise.”  Michael Beasley has shown an acre of performance.  More than that.  A whole lot more.

  • Michael Beasley was named National Freshman of the Year in a year that featured a record-setting ten freshmen selections.
  • Michael Beasley received the Pete Newell Big Man of the Year.  Go big or go home!
  • Michael Beasley earned unanimous First Team All-American honors.
  • He led the NCAA Division I in rebounding.
  • He was third in scoring.
  • He led the nation in 40-point games, 30-point, 10-rebound games, and 20-point, 10-rebound games.
  • He posted a nation-leading twenty-eight double-doubles, double troubles, breaking the freshman mark previously held by Syracuse’s Carmelo Anthony.  Yowza!

For my money, Michael Beasley was the best player in the country.  The best player in this draft.  Better than all the rest.  And the Heat got him.

They also got Mario Chalmers.  Got Mario Chalmers late.  I said this when I was pushing up on Super Mario for my Boston Celtics.  I’ll say it again.  Rock.  Shock.  Jayhawk!  Rocked ‘em and shocked ‘em at the Tourney

This Alaskan is one stone-cold killer.  If you try to stop him, you’re going to end up in an alley somewhere with the cats licking you.  Memphis ended up in an alley somewhere with the cats licking them.  Chalmers was the Jayhawks’ go-to guy in the clutch.  Not Brandon Rush.  That says something.  That says a lot.

Chalmers isn’t a flashy player.  But he makes big plays.  In the half court set, he makes the right plays.  He’s a pesky defender and a downright devastating shooter.  Chalmers was named Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 NCAA Tournament.  Chalmers is a three-time Big 12 All-Defensive selection.  The kid can flat out play.

But make no mistake this draft was about the Beast.  Derrick Rose may be wanting the MVP, Michael Beasley will be getting Rookie of the Year.
