You start the year off fine. You’re my little valentine. I’m gonna march you down the aisle. You’re the Easter Bunny when you smile. Yeah. Yeah. My heart’s in a whirl. I love, I love, I love my little calendar girl. -Neil Sedaka
Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! Ready? Ready New Yorkers? Are you ready? Are you ready for this? Are you hanging on the edge of your seat? Out of the doorway the bullets rip to the sound of the beat.
Are you ready for Tuesday? Tuesday’s a very special day in New York. Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Staten. From the Battery to the top of Manhattan. And everywhere in between. Mets fans. Yankees fans. Waiting with bated breath. Waiting with bated breath for Pedro. Waiting with bated breath for Joba. Waiting for their knight in shining armor. Waiting for him to ride across the desert with a fine Arab charger. Coming to your emotional rescue. And it needs rescuing.
The Mets staff is beleaguered and in desperate need of boosting. The Yankees other young pitchers have not come through as hoped. The legendary Pedro Martinez was sharp in a six-inning rehab start for Class A St. Lucie. Joba has been building a legend of his own as a lights out, eighth inning stopper. On Tuesday, a city watches. A city turns its lonely eyes to you, oooh oooh oooh. A city watches in anticipation to see if Pedro can show glimpses of the Pedro who had the highest winning percentage of any 200-game winner ever. A city watches with great expectations to see if Joba will fist pump his way through the American League.
Pedro’s best season as a Met was his first one. 15-8. .282 ERA. 208 Ks. That was in 2005. He hasn’t come close to those numbers since. Joba has never started a game for the Yankees in his career. His transition from setup man to a rotation spot has been all the rage in the Bronx since the Yankees first hinted their intentions. The Mets currently reside in fourth place in the NL East. The Yankees in last place in their division. Both teams could use a little love. A little love from up above. Both teams’ futures are on the line.
Tuesday night, Pedro will take the hill against the San Francisco baseball Giants. Tuesday night, Joba Chamberlain will make his first career start against the Toronto Blue Jays at fabled Yankee Stadium. Tuesday night. Turn on your SNY. Turn on your YES. Turn on and tune in. Turn on and tune into this year’s biggest night in New York City baseball. The future is now.
