Public Service Announcement: Ok, here we go! It ain’t March, but it’s here. College basketball is here baby! College basketball baby! Diaper Dandies. PTPers. Maalox Mashers. Dipsy-doo dunkeroo slam-jam-bams, it’s awesome baby! The Atlantic Sun Conference is awesome baby. After winning just two games against schools from BCS conferences in the previous three seasons, Gardner-Webb, Belmont and Mercer knocked off in succession, No. 22 Kentucky out of the SEC, Cincinnati from the Big East and the Pac-10’s No. 18 USC. How about that? What a week, what a week. Gardner-Webb? Belmont? Mercer? Who are these guys? If you don’t know, you better ask somebody.
Ask ESPN’s Andy Katz. He just named the Atlantic Sun his Conference of the Week. He just named Gardner Webb his Team of the Week.
Ask the Kentucky Wildcats. Gardner-Webb led Kentucky the entire game. UKan’t run with the Dawgs! Wire to wire. Higher and higher. How many SEC schools can say they’ve done that in fabled Rupp Arena? This private Baptist school of 4,000 students can. This private Baptist school of 4,000 students beat the winningest program in Division I college basketball history. Beat them by sixteen on their home floor. Yowza!
Ask Cincinnati. Belmont just snapped Cincinnati’s streak of 42 consecutive victories in home openers. Snap Crackle Pop! Snap Crackle Pop with open layups. Nineteen layups in all. Snap Crackle Pop with uncontested threes. Twelve three pointers in all. Belmont is the two-time defending Atlantic Sun Conference champion. Belmont will be heard from again.
ASk USC. Ask OJ Mayo. Itty bitty Mercer stunned No. 18 Southern California Saturday, spoiling the debut of O.J. Mayo. Spoiled it in a double-digit rout. Saturday’s game was supposed to begin a new era USC basketball. The dawning of new era. Looks like someone forgot to tell that to Mercer. Looks like someone forgot to tell James Florence. James Florence knocked down thirty points against Mayo and USC. Thirty fast breaking, takes the caking, shake and baking points. James Florence was just one of three freshmen to lead his conference in scoring last season. James Florence is out there having fun it the hot Atlantic Sun. Well I’m going down south where I belong. Where the days are short and the nights are long. When I walk and they walk. I twist and they twist. I Shimmy and they shimmy. I fly and they fly. We’re out there having fun in the hot Atlantic Sun.
