Go to your bosom: Knock there, and ask your heart what it doth know. -William Shakespeare.
Public Knowledge:
1. “Don’t you know who I am?” If I’m Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown, I cut ties with WR Chris Henry right now. Right now. This cat just can’t stay out of trouble. Henry was allegedly involved in an altercation with a parking attendant on the eve of rejoining the Cincinnati Bengals from his eight-game suspension. Like my main man Branch Rickey once said to Ralph Kiner, “We finished last with you; we can finish last without you.” The Bengals didn’t finish last, but you get the picture.
2. The Fightn’ Phils trade for Lidge. That answers some questions. Lidge will be the new closer. Brett Myers will be the number two starter. And now it appears Shane Victorino will definitely be starting in the outfield. So in actuality, Philly gets a number two starter for outfielder Michael Bourn. The Phillies must now absolutely, positively re-sign Aaron Rowand if they want to make a run at this thing. And that’s why they made this trade, isn’t it? Philadelphia just traded Bourne and Costanzo, their future, for a 31-year-old guy who’s been a disappointment as a closer. Throwing the dice to win now. Our stake in the future looks pretty grim. Ah. But bacon and eggs well that’s a different thing. Live now pay later.
3. Glavine back with the Braves? Could be. Braves general manager Frank Wren: “We think adding Tommy would clearly make our rotation better.” I do too. Tim Hudson. John Smoltz. Mike Hampton. Tom Glavine. And stay right here ’cause these are the good old days.
4. If the Yankees can’t jiggy with one Miggy word has it they are targeting another. Miguel Tejada. To play third. Now correct me if I’m wrong. Isn’t A-Broad a better shortstop than Jeter? Isn’t Tejada? Just asking.
5. I am Sam. Sam I am. Sam Cassell. Chris Kaman: “He’s older than dirt, but… he can still shoot the basketball.” Ye he can. Yes he can, Sam I am. 35 points to tie his highest point total since he joined the Clippers in 2005. Think he’s making a statement? A statement to Brevin Knight. Knight and Cassell have been splitting minutes but Brevin was out last night because of a sore lower back. If he wants to keep those minutes, he better get well soon.
6. Born in the USA. I’m a long gone daddy in the USA. Born in the USA. I’m a cool rocking daddy in the USA. Mike Modano’s a cool rocking daddy in the USA. Dallas Stars veteran center Mike Modano scored two goals last night. Get the papers, get the papers. Scored two goals to become the all- time American-born points leader in the National Hockey League. Scored two goals to break Phil Housley’s mark. Modano has played all 18 of his NHL seasons with the Stars franchise. At the age of 17, Modano was the first overall draft pick in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft, an honor shared by only five other Americans: Brian Lawton, Bryan Berard, Rick DiPietro, Erik Johnson and Patrick Kane. Mike Modano, this Bud’s for you.
7. I love Sean Taylor. Redskins FS Sean Taylor. Big hitter. Ferocious hitter. Ravenous hitter. The Meast. Half man, half beast. Is this the next Sean Taylor?
8. Tampa Bay looks to Japan to find some relief. Can you blame them? Look at the success the Sox had with Okajima. Rookie of the Year? Right-handers Kazuo Fukumori and Masahide Kobayashi are among several pitchers eligible to leave as free agents, and the Rays have been linked to both.
9. The Detroit Lions? The Detroit Lions 6-2? Who woulda thunk? Not me. I know. I know many of the Lions victories so far have not been against teams with winning records this season. But still. Maybe John Kitna wasn’t so crazy after all these years. After all these years of losing. Remember, it was just last year that the Lions were 3-13. But know this: Although the Lions have three very winnable against the Cardinals, the Vikings and Kansas City, they still have games against Green Bay twice, the Giants, Dallas and the Chargers still on the schedule. Win one of those, and Kitna will be truly prophetic.
10. Heisman watch. As much I love Matt Ice Ryan, College Football is a fickle thing. You’re only as good as your last game. In Dennis Dixon’s last game, he went 13 for 22. He threw for 189 passing yards with 4 TDs. Ran it 11 times for 57 yards in a 35-23 victory over then undefeated Arizona State. That’s a pretty pretty good last game. His best game of the season came in the Ducks’ biggest game of the season. That speaks volumes about this kid.
Peace out homies. Six Two and Even!
