Who’s Better? The Who’s Better Game

Whos Better? The Whos Better Game

It’s better than yours.  Damn right it’s better than yours.  I can teach you, but I have to charge.

Public Service Announcement:  OK, let’s go!  In my last post I wrote that Russ Francis was better than Dave Casper and that Carlton Fisk was better than Thurman Munson.  That led me to this.  The Who’s Better Game.  We’ve all played it.  We all love it.  So alright, here we go, The Who’s Better Game.   And, remember kids, you played it here first 0n Josh Q. Public:

1. Albert Pujols vs. A-Rod:  At this point in time, Phat Albert has taken over the status of best baseball player on the planet.  No question. Do I hate on Alex?  Absolutely.  Is he better than Winnie the Pujols?  Absolutely not.  Pujols gets it done with nobody in the line-up protecting him.  A-Rod is in the middle of probably the best line-up in baseball.  Pujols hits to all fields.  Has near perfect balance.  Amazing plate coverage, and can drive pitches to left, center and right with equal authority.  He has the quickest hands in baseball.  He just whips the bat through the strike zone.  Last but not least, without him, my fantasy baseball team would be in the cellar.

2. Kobe Vs. LeBron:  The battle of the one name wonders.  Let me qualify by stating I absolutely hate Kobe. So this may not be fair.  But, who cares.  It’s my damn blog.  I take LeBron hands down.  Kobe only cares about Kobe.  He does not care about winning.  If he did, he never would have run Shaq Daddy out of town. Those two would have won a bucket load of more rings together.  Just watch what Shaq and and Dwayne Wade do this year.  Kobe’s a great scorer, but not much else.  LeBron’s the real deal.  When he came up, I wanted to hate him.  When he signed the Nike deal, I really wanted him to fail.  But put me with the converted.  If I’m starting a team, my first pick is LeBron.  I stay as far away from Kobe Bean as I possibly can.  He’s a cancer.  My guess is he goes out and scores a ton tonight.  So what, they still lose.  LeBron and four guys off the street in Cleveland beat the Wizards.  There’s nothing LeBron can’t do.  He’s quick. He’s strong.  He’s quickly becoming the best passer in the game.  Kobe never passes up a shot.  The weakest part of LeBron’s game is his outside jumper, but even that is getting better daily.  The fact that LeBron wants to share the ball and get others involved puts him head and shoulders above Kobe.  Kobe ccould care less about his teamates.  Winning appears to be all LeBron’s cares about.  That’s what I like best, his desire. I t took Kobe Bryant two full years before he became Kobe.  Then, two more years to earn the trust and respect of teammates, which he may not fully have now. Oh, did I say, I pick LeBron?

3. Doug Flutie Vs. Rob Johnson:  I still get mad everytime I think about this one.  Rob Johnson had no buisness playing in that playoff game against the Titans back in 1999. Flutie took over and led the Bills to the playoffs.  His gutsy, balls to the wall, run and gun style turned that team around.  There’d be no playoffs without Flutie. Furthermore, I firmly believe there would have been no Music City Miracle if he had started that game. Flutie said afterward, “The thing that frustrates me more than anything is I’ve been waiting 10 years for this opportunity. We’ve got a great football team. We’ve got the best defense in the league. We’ve got a real chance. And this is the reason I came back … and then all of a sudden you turn it over. That’s the frustrating part for me.”  Me too, Dougie, Me Too.

4. Sidney Crosby Vs. Alexander Ovechkin:  Ovechkin, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 draft and Crosby, the No. 1 choice in 2005.  Now, the answer is easy.  Alexander the Great, El Ocho, by a landslide.  But in the beginning of the year, everybody was hanging their hat on Crosby.  Not anymore.  Ovechkin ended the year with 52 goals and 54 assists the only other rookie in the 50-50 club.  The 20-year-old Russian joined Teemu Selanne, who had 76 goals and 132 points for the Winnipeg Jets in 1992-93. Ovechkin may be the best player on the worst team.  Put another stud or two around him and we may have another Great One.  Crosby did have 39 goals and 63 assists, but he just doesn’t seem to impose his will like Ovechkin can.  Kind of soft.  Reminds me of Joe Thornton. No slouch, but something missing.  Ovechkin just seems to do whatever he wants on the ice.

5. Greg Maddux Vs. Roger Clemens:  This is a very tough one. Clemens is another guy I have no problems hating on.  Maddux is a class act.  What makes this so hard, is Roger’s numbers are sooooo good.  When I first started to do this, I went in picking Maddux, but after looking over all the stats, sadly, I have to pick Rocket.  Strikeouts. Complete games. Wins. All of it. But this was tough. In 1994 Maddux was the first hpitcher in history to capture three straight Cy Young Awards.  In ’95, he won another.  He also has about a million Gold Gloves.  He’s got a ring.  He’s 4-0 now, has his 300 wins and 3000 strike outs.  Has the best control I’ve ever seen.  Joe Morgan said, “Greg Maddux could put a baseball through a Life Saver if you asked him.”  Now thats pretty good.  A Life Saver’s hole’s kinda small.  You know what, I take it back, screw Roger.  I take Maddux.

Public Spectacle:

Peace out homies.  Six Two and Even!

    Robbie Dimes Says:

It’s so close now between Pujols and A-Rod. I honestly don’t think A-Rod can lead a team, but he plays second fiddle to Jeter extremely well. I’m looking for comparisons… I would have said Scottie Pippen but A-Rod is more talented than Jeter… maybe Emmitt Smith to Troy Aikman? If I had to build my franchise right now, you gotta pick Poo-holes.

I’d like to wait for more success from LeBron before saying he’s better than Kobe. Nash may have been the best statistical player in the NBA, but how how HOW can the Lakers possibly be in the playoffs? Smush Parker?? Kwame Brown?? I hate Kobe as much as you do, but he was the most valuable player to his team this season. LeBron’s only 21, and he’s about twice as good as Kobe was at this point. Scary.

    Doug Flutie was awesome.

At the end of their respective careers, no one will be debating anymore: Crosby will be better than Ovechkin. It probably won’t be close. The real question is will Crosby play on the Penguins long enough to challenge Super Mario’s team records?

And I know you’re bitter about Clemens, I hated the dude for four years after that Piazza beaning. But he is the best pitcher in the last 50 years. Period. Maddux is incredible; his longevity and best seasons have been just as impressive as Rocket’s but Clemens has been the best pitcher in baseball for a long long time. I hope his kids suck though. I bet they will.

    Hey, thanks for the feedback:

A-Rod’s better than Jeter. Jeter’s the face of the team, but, c’mon now.

Who would you rather have on your team, Kobe or LeBron. Its just that simple.

I have to disagree with you about Crosby. Ovechkin’s just a beast.

No worries, thats why we all love to play the Who’s Better Game….And remember kids, you played it here first on…Josh Q. Public

wait a minute dimes, it took me a second, i know who you are now

    tvjunkie Says:

Crosby is not soft. He’s 18 years old (still is by the way). “El Ocho” is hands down better right now. But wait until Crosby gets his “man strength”. He has a bad temper and absolutely no protection from his teammates. When all is said and done, this will be their final tallies:

    Ovechkin:
    16 seasons
    650 goals
    800 assists
    1450 pts (top 20 all-time)
    2 Cups (neither with Washington)

    Crosby:
    20 seasons
    600 goals
    1200 assists
    1800 pts (top 5 all-time)
4 Cups (at least 2 with Pittsburgh)

Remember that Crosby will soon be joined by Evgeni Malkin, the 19-year-old Russian phenom who is considered to be the best player in the world not playing in the NHL. He was the 2nd pick overall behind Ovechkin in the 2004 draft.

All that being said, I agree that Ovechkin is the better player right now and arguably the best rookie of all time. However, he’s got two years on Crosby age-wise. Let’s just see where Crosby is when he’s 21 years old.

nobody likes a big mouth, tv junkie, and not for nothing, crosby is soft, he’ll be right where thornton is, nowhere baby, nowhere

If the Bills could tackle there would be no question about the QBs. Not sure if you recall, but just before the forward lateral, Johnson drove the Bills down the field for a field goal. A great drive with 1 shoe on. And now I think he’s selling shoes. Flutie Flakes

Being a Yankee fan this is simple. Gay Rod is an animal but Phat Al eats animals for breakfast. With the bases loaded the other night Gay Rod does NOTHING!!!!
    Albert wins

This is another easy one since I’m a lakers fan. Kobe is very good but I like the team play of LeBron. Triple double your first playoff game? He followed it up with 10 turnovers the next game but I still take LeBron. Shaq come back (20 lbs less)!!!

I would like to see stats on how Crosby and Ovechkin progressed throughout the year. Did Crosby get better? Did teams throw new defenses at Ovechkin? Both players are very good but give me Thomas Vanek. Go Sabres!!! Long run I think Sid will be better.

    N word please….Clemons

Another good article Q but you missed the obvious comparison. Bird vs Magic!!! Was this intentional? I know it’s your damn blog but if you talk Kobe vs LeBron you must allow us to wet our beaks in a Bird vs Magic discussion.

    Joel Says:

Pujols is the best hitter going today, no question. But is what he’s doing any better than what Bonds did a few years back? Pujols is doing this, but he’s getting pitched to. Bonds got walked every time up.

How can you pick LeBron over Kobe? Sure he may be the better player given time, but how many other players can basically single handedly lead a team to the playoffs. Kobe went 1 vs. 5 every night and has the Lakers facing the Suns.

Coming from a bitter ex-bills fan, don’t ever mention Rob Johnson’s name in the same breath as Flutie. Flutie is a hero here. Rob Johnson is easily the worst mistake ever by the Bills. They gave him $25 million over 5 years sight unseen.
